The Ten Essentials — Scaled for Day Hikes
You do not need expedition-level gear for a 6-hour loop, but every item category should be represented in a lighter form.
Gear
- Navigation: map, compass, or reliable offline GPS.
- Sun protection: SPF, sunglasses, hat.
- Insulation: puffy or fleece layer.
- Illumination: headlamp with spare batteries.
- First aid: blister care, bandages, pain relief.
- Fire: lighter in a waterproof bag (where permitted).
- Repair: duct tape and a small multi-tool.
- Nutrition: 200–300 extra calories beyond plan.
- Hydration: bottles or reservoir plus filter on longer routes.
- Emergency shelter: lightweight bivy or emergency blanket.
What to Leave Home
Jeans, cotton hoodies, and glass water bottles add weight and risk. A 20–30 litre pack is enough for most Scandinavian day hikes spring through autumn.
