How to Plan Your First Multi-Day Backpacking Trip

Eight Weeks Before

Choose a well-marked route with huts or established campsites for your first overnight. Scandinavian DNT huts are ideal — you can carry less food and sleep indoors if weather turns.

Trail Tips

  • Week 8–6: Build weekly mileage on day hikes with a loaded pack.
  • Week 5–3: Do a full-gear shakedown hike with all weight.
  • Week 2: Confirm reservations, transport, and weather windows.
  • Day before: Pack food by meal, check stove fuel, charge devices.
  • On trail: Camp early on day one — fatigue magnifies small mistakes.

Gear

  • Pack under 20% of body weight for a first trip if possible.
  • Test your tent at home before the trail.
  • Carry a headlamp, blister kit, and rain shell within easy reach.
