Hiking with Dogs

Before You Go

Check leash laws — many Norwegian national park zones require dogs on lead year-round to protect grazing livestock and wildlife.

Gear

• Collapsible water bowl and extra water — dogs dehydrate fast.
• Paw balm or booties for sharp rock and ice.
• Harness with handle for scrambling assistance.
• Bear bell or leash in wildlife areas.
• Poop bags — pack it out always.

Trail Tips

• Build paw endurance on short hikes before long days.
• Watch for overheating even in cool air — dogs do not sweat like humans.
• Yield to other hikers; not everyone is comfortable around dogs.
• Check for ticks after hikes in southern Norway summer.
