Right of Way Basics
On narrow paths, hikers going uphill generally have priority — they have a harder time regaining rhythm after stopping. Step aside on the downhill side when safe.
Trail Tips
- Greet fellow hikers — a nod or hello is standard in Norway and Sweden.
- Yield to faster hikers behind you; let them pass at a wide spot.
- Keep music in headphones, not speakers.
- Groups should hike single file on narrow sections.
- Dogs on leash where required; yield when passing families with children.
Passing on Steep Terrain
Announce yourself calmly when approaching from behind: 'Passing on your left.' On shared multi-use trails, cyclists yield to hikers and both yield to horses where posted.
