When to Turn Back
Scandinavian weather shifts fast. Whiteout, lightning above treeline, or rivers swollen beyond safe crossing are clear abort signals.
Trail Tips
- Check yr.no or MET Norway forecasts before every hike.
- In fog, navigate by compass between known features — not by guessing ridge lines.
- Hypothermia risk rises when wet and windy; eat and add layers early.
- Avoid exposed ridges during thunderstorms.
- Mark your turnaround time before you leave the car.
Gear
- Waterproof shell and pack liner are non-negotiable.
- Gaiters keep trouser legs and boot tops dry in heather and bog.
- Spare warm layer in a dry bag inside the pack.
